Ben began playing the cornet and trumpet at the age of seven before moving to the tuba when he was 12. He studied at the Junior School at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester for eight years and then went on to study as an undergraduate at the college. He won the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. Ben was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and more recently the European Union Youth Orchestra and has also worked with Orchestra Mozart, based in Bologna, Italy under the direction of Claudio Abbado.
