Richard was born and educated in Derbyshire and studied cello with Florence Hooton, Raphael Walfisch and William Pleeth. He won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama graduating in 1994 with Distinction and was awarded the Guildhall's coveted Gold Medal for a performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto in the Barbican. Richard has given recitals at London's Wigmore Hall and South Bank Centre and made several recordings. He has held the posts of principal cello with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and is the cellist of the Dante String Quartet.
